What breed for a service dog?

I’m am considering getting a service dog. I need a small dog that can easily travel with me by car and on airplanes. Simple tasks, like picking up and retrieving small objects, and letting me know that there is someone waiting at my front door, and distracting me, when I have a panic attack – are all that would be required. ALSO – I will have to train the dog on my own via books and videos. Does anyone have a breed suggestion for me? How about training books and videos? Service organizations that might possibly be of help to me (Louisiana/ Mississippi/Alabama area)? I prefer a softer coated breed, but would be willing to look into wiry coats too. Thanks in advance for any advice.

This is directed specifically to people that train dogs for a living, whether it’s basic puppy obedience or competition agility or sheep herding or showing or whatever – the important thing is that a major source of your income actually involves working with dogs, because I can Google (or am I supposed to say "yahoo" here?) generic information myself. Starting from training my own dogs as a hobby, reading a ton of books (I’m a big Patricia McConnell and Monks of New Skete fan) and magazines, watching videos and seminars, and participating in lists on the internet, where do I go next for actual work? Answer with your story and real life experience. What did you do, how did you get to where you are? What worked and didn’t work? What would you do differently if you started over again? Are there particular sources of information you prefer? Do you make enough money training, or do you do other things to supplement? Thanks in advance for your insightful, real world responses. Thanks for the response lizzy. I’ve seen other dog trainer questions around these parts and there is much bashing of "trainers" that work at Petco and Petsmart. To the trainer community in general, would it be fair to say that maybe it’s not the best place to get your own dog trained, but it’s a good place to gain some experience yourself? Or is working there also somehow subpar? In terms of companies that are actually hiring, those two are always up there.

there’s a good chance I will be the very proud owner of TWO jack russell puppies (both males) in the next few months! Anyway can yall suggest 2 good books I can buy on puppy training (housebreaking training that WORK, teaching them tricks, getting along, exercise, etc)…..I have already picked up "The Loved Dog" after seeing the author on Oprah show — I will read these books before I get the pups b/c I want to start off as right as possible with their training…thanks for the suggestions in advance!

Question @ putting a dog down……….?

We have a 2-year old, fixed, male full-bred pit bull. We got from a friend when he was 6 months old. The former owner and the dog have an avid hatred for each other, so I am unsure of his history. He has shown aggressive tendnencies in the past, but seems to be getting much worse. He has not bitten anyone, but he has jumped into the face of 2 men and head-butted them. He is starting unprovoked fights with our other dogs. (the pit bull is a house dog, the other dogs are hunting dogs in kennels in the back yard) He is getting hurt from these fights through the fence, and so are the other dogs – if they choose to fight back. A month or so ago he growled at our 10-year old son because he grabbed his collar to lead him outside. Nearly everyone we know is afraid of him. He is muzzled in public as he does not like most children and there are 2 I know he would hurt if he got the chance. He got out of our front door and chased one a few weeks ago and luckily I realized he was out and called the dog before he did damage. Although he has not bitten anyone, yet, I am getting more afraid to take a chance with the dog. I have tried Cesar’s methods; gotten him a puppy to play with and drain his energy (she is a mixed breed, calm, likes people/children, etc.). They get along fine and I give the pitbull extra attention to make up for what I spend on the puppy. But he seems to be getting worse and last night jumped into the face of my brother-in-law whom he has known for the last 1 1/2 years. I’ve bought, read and tried lots of dog-training books. He is well-trained otherwise (on leash – walks great, does not mark his territory, etc.) but is afraid of car rides for some reason. We are at our wits end and are concerned for the safety of our child, his friends, our friends and neighbors and neighbor’s children. Has anyone been in this difficult situation and how did you handle it? Thank you in advance for taking the time to respond. Thank you for your advice. We have made the decision to euthanize him. When we got the dog, he growled at me. His parents were not human-friendly either – and I should have known this was going to be a problem but thought I could ‘train’ it out of him. He does not like men, female or male children. This is not getting better, but worse. Our son does not mistreat him and has led him by the collar outside hundreds of times up until the time he growled. He is crated and obviously must be crated a lot when people are over that are afraid of him (often) or that he is aggressives towards (also often). I think the first 6 months of his life must have been abusive by children and/or males. He is protective of me, but to a dangerous point. No amount of correcting/timeouts/exercise, etc. has alleviated any of his aggression tendencies. This is not a breed-specific problem by any means, but I put his breed in to emphasize damage possibility.

i recently found out the father of my dog is also the grandfather and he claims the dogs are purebred chihuahuas but my dog is mixed with something. i was to young to understand dog breeding and adoption services at the time i didn’t know better. bottom line im sure this guy’s trying to make a quick buck.

I have 3 dogs that I started training 3 months ago in basic obediance. They are doing great!! I love it and so do they! I would like to go further with this, though I’m not sure exactly what i want to train them. I think they are smart enough to service dogs( at least one is ) I think it would be so neat to teach them how to turn on or off the lights etc… Also agility would be really cool(and fun for me and the dogs!). If anyone knows of some good website that have info on futhering their training past basic obediance I would appriciate it. Also, I would prefer not to have to pay for it, I need just websites that anyone can use without cost. Thanks, Kat Currently they know sit, down, crawl, stay, up, dance, walk(on 2 feet) and speak. Must Read Dog Books?

Can anyone recommend any thorough, highly informative books about dogs? I’m looking for information books about individual breeds, behavior and training. I have yet to find anything good at Barnes and Noble- everything gives really general information that’s all the same. Even books about specific breeds are all the same- they just give care info and substitute the respective name of the breed when appropriate. I’m looking for books that are more of textbook nature than information for the novice dog owner. Thanks in advance!
